I’ve seen more and more people putting together their ‘style uniform’, which is just a fun way to describe your everyday outfit. I remember reading about this for the first time on A Beautiful Mess where Elsie talked about her everyday uniform . I’ve done this for a looong time (I tend to find an outfit I like and wear it to death), but I’ve never thought of it as my uniform before…. until summer hit and I realized that I’ve created my perfect summer uniform without even realizing it! Here are 2 of my favorite reasons to have a style uniform:
- It makes it easy to get dressed in the morning.
- It’s something that makes you feel confident, so you don’t have to try on a million things before deciding.
I’m obsessed with the idea of a style uniform. It’s quick, easy, and totally customizable, plus anything that cuts down on my decision making is a plus in my book. Here are the 5 essentials of my perfect summer uniform:
A band tee or t-shirt
Band tees have been my go-to since high school. They’re easy to style, super comfortable, and pretty unique (especially if you find vintage band tees!). I tend to wear band tees from more “modern” bands, but this look will work with literally any t-shirt you can find. I like my t-shirts a little baggier, and then I tuck in just the front edge.
Let’s just be real here: nobody wants to wear a bra during the summer. My solution: a cute, comfy bralette. They go with literally any outfit, are comfortable to wear all day, and best of all you can wear them with any type of shirt because you don’t have to worry about hiding the straps. This is my favorite bralette, and it’s only $15 from Target. Plus it comes in tons of colors!
To be honest, I wear high-waisted things all year round (I’m looking at you, Gaiam leggings). I feel that they give my body a better shape and usually look cuter with my style. But especially in summer, high-waisted shorts are a must. Tucking the t-shirt in the front gives a little extra style and shows off any cute details of the shorts!
Comfy shoes are so important for summer. Flip-flops are perfect for the beach or pool, but comfy sneakers are my go-to for day-to-day life. I’m a Vans girl at heart, so Vans are what I’m usually (always) wearing.
Here’s a Tip: instead of heading straight to the Vans store, check out Nordstrom Rack first. They carry all the unique, special edition Vans at great prices. I just recently found these classic black and white checkered Vans at Nordstrom Rack for only $25!
An oversized flannel
Tying a flannel around your waist not only defines your body shape, but is also super handy for chilly late-night barbecues or beach trips. Thrift stores are the first place I check for flannels because they’re a good price, there’s always a ton of them (don’t be afraid to shop in the men’s section!), and you can find some really unique colors. This flannel (my absolute favorite) was a thrift store find. Not only is it in perfect condition, but it was only $5.
